I Will Come Again

Scripture Passage: John 14:1-11 (NASB)

“Do not let your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you. If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also. And you know the way where I am going.” Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going, how do we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.

If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; from now on you know Him, and have seen Him.”

Philip said to Him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” Jesus said to him, “Have I been so long with you, and yet you have not come to know Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father is in Me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on My own initiative, but the Father abiding in Me does His works. 11 Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father is in Me; otherwise believe because of the works themselves.

SUMMARY

Jesus tells the disciples not to let their hearts be trouble but to believe in Him. He reminds them that He is preparing a place for them and will come back for them. Thomas said he didn’t know where Jesus was going and Jesus declared that He is the way, the truth and the life and that no one comes to the Father but through Him. Philip then asked Jesus to show them the Father, but Jesus said that if they have seen Him, then they have seen the Father and that He is in the Father and the Father is in Him.

MEDITATION & REFLECTION

People say these days that “all religion leads to God or heaven”, but Jesus refutes that statement and declares that He is the only way, the truth and the life. We can deduce from Jesus’ words then, that, apart from Him I am lost, I am believing lies of the enemy and I am dead in my sins.

Jesus was the only holy One, who by His incarnation, allowed mankind to see the Father, and by His surrendering in complete obedience became the only acceptable sacrifice for our sins. Jesus also promised to return so that where He is, we may be also. He does not save us and leave us as orphans, He is preparing a place for me and you! No matter what it may look like today, we have the promise of Jesus to return for us.

I remember reciting today’s verse of His preparing a place for me and returning for His people (John 14:3) when I was in grade school. I’ve forgotten about them until our recent challenges of COVID-19. It gives me much hope, despite many fears and uncertainties, that Jesus is keeping His promise, as He always does. He is preparing... and so must I to meet Him.

APPLICATION

The work on the cross was complete and finished in Christ, but my calling to share the gospel still must go on... so others may know He is the way, the truth and the life. I confess that I have not been faithfully sharing the good news and pray that with the help of the Holy Spirit, I will boldly share why I have hope even in dark times as these, and to share who God is and how He sent His only Son to save us.

PRAYER

Thank you, Lord for what You did on the cross to save me. You also are preparing a place for me. And as You have promised, I know You’ll be coming back for us, very soon. Give me a heart of urgency to share how much You love people and want them to be in Your fold. Equip us Lord to always be prepared to give an answer to the hope we have in You.
