He Will Guide You Into All The Truth

Scripture Passage: John 16:1-15 (NASB)

“These things I have spoken to you so that you may be kept from stumbling. They will make you outcasts from the synagogue, but an hour is coming for everyone who kills you to think that he is offering service to God. These things they will do because they have not known the Father or Me. But these things I have spoken to you, so that when their hour comes, you may remember that I told you of them. These things I did not say to you at the beginning, because I was with you.

“But now I am going to Him who sent Me; and none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’ But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you. And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment; concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me; 10 and concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father and you no longer see Me; 11 and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.

12 “I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come. 14 He will glorify Me, for He will take of Mine and will disclose it to you. 15 All things that the Father has are Mine; therefore I said that He takes of Mine and will disclose it to you.

SUMMARY

Jesus speaks of the difficulties - excommunication and martyrdom - that the disciples will face from those who do not believe in God and Jesus after Jesus is lifted up. When He leaves, His beloved disciples will face trials, but He exhorts them to stand firm in the faith without failing, to the end. However, He did not let them face the difficulties alone. He promised the disciples that He would send the Holy Spirit, the Comforter, in His place to remind us of our sins, heal our self-righteousness, guide us into all truth, tell us of what is to come, and let us know what to do and how to live victoriously in Christ.

MEDITATION & REFLECTION

In this passage, Jesus was preparing to die and be resurrected. The disciples were sad with the thought of parting with Jesus, who had lived with them and taught them for three years. But when the disciples were sorrowful, Jesus told them that the Holy Spirit would come as their Comforter. “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you” (John 14:26). “But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come” (v. 13).

On the surface, the most difficult time has come for the disciples - to say goodbye to Jesus. However, Jesus promised not to leave the disciples alone, but to send the Comforter, the Holy Spirit, who will be with them. The Holy Spirit convicts the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment (v. 8). He reminds us of the things of Christ and the truths about God. For this reason, we must live our lives by trusting and following the guidance of the Spirit of Truth. We must read the Word of God and live according to what the Holy Spirit reveals to us.

APPLICATION

I need to think about what my life frequency is attuned to. I am constrained during this time of the pandemic, and I see myself becoming anxious with the threat of an invisible virus that may be hiding somewhere. Rather than focusing much of my time on the Word, I am more focused on the news related to COVID-19. The news shows how many people have been infected and killed during this crisis. Nevertheless, now is the time to focus on how the Holy Spirit is moving

“The mind of man plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps” (Proverbs 16:9). I may plan my way with my heart, but I will remember that it is Jehovah who directs my steps. Let us focus on and seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

I also resolve to keep up with my Bible reading plan.

PRAYER

God, today, many people are threatened with and have lost their lives because of this virus. Please intervene so that a vaccine and medicine can be released as soon as possible. Also, please give health, wisdom, and strength to the medical staff who are struggling to help their patients.

My heart keeps focusing on the world, but I resolve to give my heart to the Holy Spirit and rely on Him. Heal and restore me when I read Your Word, and remember that I am a fragile human being unable to do Your will apart from You. Help me to live a life completely dependent on the Holy Spirit. I pray in the name of Jesus, Amen.
