Glorify Your Son, That The Son May Glorify You

Scripture Passage: John 17:1-5 (NASB)

Jesus spoke these things; and lifting up His eyes to heaven, He said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify Your Son, that the Son may glorify You, even as You gave Him authority over all flesh, that to all whom You have given Him, He may give eternal life. This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent. I glorified You on the earth, having accomplished the work which You have given Me to do. Now, Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was.

SUMMARY

Jesus, after speaking with His disciples, lifted up His eyes to heaven and tells the Father that the hour has come for Him to suffer on the cross. He asks the Father to glorify His Son so that the Son may glorify Him. Jesus continues by saying that eternal life is knowing the Father as the one true God and Jesus Christ as the Son He has sent. Jesus then declares that He glorified the Father on earth through accomplishing His work. He asks again for the Father to be glorified with Him.

MEDITATION & REFLECTION

I find it so incredible that Jesus spent His entire life glorifying the Father and not wanting anything for Himself. He was obedient in finishing every work the Father had entrusted Him with, and He waited until the Father had decided His time had finally come. Even after accomplishing everything the Father wanted and glorifying Him on earth, Jesus still asked and asked again for the Father to be glorified through Him on the cross. Jesus was given authority over all flesh, yet used that authority to give us eternal life. He asked the Father to glorify Him so that we may witness God's glory and power through the cross. He did all these things so that we may know God.

Jesus demonstrates great devotion and highlights for us how important it is to glorify God in everything we do. I see so much patience, love, and selflessness in Jesus. Through how He lived his life for the Father, I'm touched by such dedication and discipline.

APPLICATION

I ask myself, "Are the things I'm doing, thinking, saying glorifying God?" It can be hard sometimes and I always struggle to stop and ask God and wait on Him in everything I do. I can really be a go-getter sometimes and in impatience, just go and get things done for my ultimate benefit. But through this passage, I want to have the discipline to be still and wait upon the Lord. I'll start by going through a short list of things I do each day and ask God what I can do in each area to bring glory to Him.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, I thank You for showing me such selflessness through Your Son Jesus Christ. I thank You for the suffering You endured and for being so faithful to us through it all. I repent of the things I've done and said that didn't glorify You. I'm sorry for not demonstrating the love and patience you've shown me. I pray that I will glorify You and include You in everything that I do. Thank You for being so good to me. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
