Christ Has Set Us Free
Scripture Passage: Romans 8:1-4 (NASB)
1 Therefore there is now no condemnation at all for those who are in Christ Jesus. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death. 3 For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did: sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh, 4 so that the requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
SUMMARY
Paul states that those who are in Christ Jesus are not condemned, because Jesus set us free from the law of sin and death. Because our flesh is weak and cannot fulfill the requirements of the law, God sent His perfect Son as an offering and to fulfill the law in our place.
REFLECTION AND MEDITATION
I am a Christian. I am a child of God. The old has gone, the new has come. I am a new creation. But I often find myself asking – why do I still feel so fearful, anxious, worried and even guilty? Why am I still struggling so much with my old sins? Why am I still enslaved to worldly pleasure, comfort and praise? Why is there still so much anguish and pain, so many scars within me? Why do I not feel free?
“For I joyfully agree with the law of God in the inner persons, but I see a different law in the parts of my body waging war against the law of my mind, and making me a prisoner of the law of sin, the law which is in my body’s parts. Wretched man that I am! Who will set me free from the body of this death?”
(Romans 7: 22-24)
But through today’s text, God once again reminds me that there is no condemnation at all for those who are in Christ. And the law of the Spirit of life in Jesus has completely set me free from the law of sin and of death. It doesn’t matter what circumstances I am in, what I feel, what I tell myself or what the world tells me. The absolute truth is that I am free. And that fact will not change even if I don’t feel it. 1+1 = 2 will not ever change whether I understand or believe it or not.
So then how do I live today, when I still face such pain, suffering, temptation and tribulations daily? How do I make sense out of such a situation, when it often feels like I am not “free” at all? Through today’s Word, the Lord gently tells me once again to take that first step. To come closer to Him, to seek to understand His heart and His words, which have insurmountable power and wisdom.
APPLICATION
I am usually in a rush in the morning, trying to feed and get my son ready for school. I want to challenge myself to start my day by reciting the truth, His Word, and write that verse in a small pocket notebook before I go about my day. That way I can go back to my notebook throughout the day to remind myself of the Truth when I need it.
PRAYER
Father,
I thank You for freeing me from my fear, anxiety, depression, worries of life and the bondage of my sins.
I thank You that You do not base Your love for me on my work and that there is no condemnation no matter how great my sin, for I am in Christ.
Help me to trust You, to overcome my doubts by Your Spirit so I may truly live the life of freedom that You have already bought for me through Your only Son, Jesus Christ.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
