Wisdom Revealed Through God's Spirit

Scripture Passage: 1 Corinthians 2:6-16 (NASB)

Yet we do speak wisdom among those who are mature; a wisdom, however, not of this age nor of the rulers of this age, who are passing away; but we speak God’s wisdom in a mystery, the hidden wisdom which God predestined before the ages to our glory; the wisdom which none of the rulers of this age has understood; for if they had understood it they would not have crucified the Lord of glory; but just as it is written,

“Things which eye has not seen and ear has not heard,
And which have not entered the heart of man,
All that God has prepared for those who love Him.”

10 For to us God revealed them through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches all things, even the depths of God. 11 For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so the thoughts of God no one knows except the Spirit of God. 12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may know the things freely given to us by God, 13 which things we also speak, not in words taught by human wisdom, but in those taught by the Spirit, combining spiritual thoughts with spiritual words.

14 But a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised. 15 But he who is spiritual appraises all things, yet he himself is appraised by no one. 16 For who has known the mind of the Lord, that he will instruct Him? But we have the mind of Christ.

SUMMARY

Paul wrote to the saints of the church at Corinth to focus only on God’s wisdom. It is different from the wisdom of this age. It is a hidden wisdom which the rulers of this age did not understand, and they crucified the Lord. God’s wisdom can only be revealed through the Spirit. We have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may know the things freely given to us by God. The Spirit teaches us spiritual words to express spiritual thoughts. A natural man cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised, but believers have the mind of Christ.

MEDITATION & REFLECTION

In verse 9, Paul reminded the church in the book of Isaiah 64: 4 “Things which eye has not seen and ear has not heard, And which have not entered the heart of man, All that God has prepared for those who love Him.” By grace, God has revealed His plan for salvation to me. No worldly wisdom, debates, or reasoning can compare to the truth and grace that the gospel brings me. As I seek God’s wisdom and meditate on today’s passage, the word “mature” in verse 6, and also verse 16, “But we have the mind of Christ” were highlighted for me. I asked myself: “Am I mature in Christ that I am not easily distracted by worldly views and chasing after worldly wisdom?” I pondered: “Am I discerned and alerted?”, “Do I have the mind of Christ?”

My six year old son and five year old daughter started their first grade and kindergarten via remote learning since July. I thank God that through the pandemic He provides me an opportunity to be more involved in their education. As I go through their curriculum together with them, I am so thankful to all their teachers’ efforts in teaching children through the screen. Besides math, reading, writing, and other subjects, they learn to make habits to help them become highly effective people. Today the Spirit reveals to me that in addition to the schoolwork, I shall also spread gospel seeds and cultivate their little hearts. God’s wisdom is greater and God gives greater power for us who believe.

APPLICATION

I want to resume doing quiet time with my children before they start their schoolwork. I will prioritize their learning schedule while God gives me this remote-learning opportunity. I will also try to help them with their monthly memorization verses at night before they go to bed.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, thank you for revealing the hidden wisdom to me. Help me never waste this wisdom you give me, and may I have the mind of Christ. I pray that Your help is with me to continue sowing into the next generation. In Jesus’ name I pray.
