He Hears Me When I Call
Scripture Passage: Psalm 116:1-7 (NASB)
I love the Lord, because He hears
My voice and my supplications.
2 Because He has inclined His ear to me,
Therefore I shall call upon Him as long as I live.
3 The cords of death encompassed me
And the terrors of Sheol came upon me;
I found distress and sorrow.
4 Then I called upon the name of the Lord:
“O Lord, I beseech You, save my life!”
5 Gracious is the Lord, and righteous;
Yes, our God is compassionate.
6 The Lord preserves the simple;
I was brought low, and He saved me.
7 Return to your rest, O my soul,
For the Lord has dealt bountifully with you.
SUMMARY
The psalmist expresses his love for the Lord because God hears his supplications. When he was in the midst of distress and deep sorrow, he called upon the name of the Lord and God answered his prayers. He confesses that our God is gracious, righteous, and compassionate.
MEDITATION & REFLECTION
Sometimes life gets hard. It may feel like we are tied up with the cord of death and dragged to the terrors of Sheol as the psalmist describes in this passage (v. 3). But there is hope — God hears and answers our prayers! God knows everything we face in this life and even knows our thoughts (Psalm 139:2). It is our confidence as believers to know that He hears and answers our prayers according to His will (1 John 5:14). We need to pray fervently and trust in God who hears and answers our prayers and supplications.
APPLICATION
I experienced many ups and downs during this pandemic. I was glad to spend quality time with family at home but grew weary taking care of two young kids all day long. I was happy to return to work after a long break but found out that my work schedule reduced in half. I often felt frustrated and defeated. Today’s passage gave me hope to cling unto the Lord with every matter, big or small. He cares and hears me when I call upon His name. I will continuously pray during this difficult time and trust in God who knows what is best for my family and situation and takes care of everything.
PRAYER
Heavenly Father, I feel comforted knowing that You hear and answer my prayers. You know my struggles and burdens. Help me to bring every request before the feet of Jesus and pray earnestly. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
