God is My Ultimate Inheritance
Scripture Passage: Deuteronomy 18:1-14 (NASB)
1“The Levitical priests, the whole tribe of Levi, shall have no portion or inheritance with Israel; they shall eat the Lord’s offerings by fire and His portion. 2 They shall have no inheritance among their countrymen; the Lord is their inheritance, as He promised them.
3 “Now this shall be the priests’ due from the people, from those who offer a sacrifice, either an ox or a sheep, of which they shall give to the priest the shoulder and the two cheeks and the stomach. 4 You shall give him the first fruits of your grain, your new wine, and your oil, and the first shearing of your sheep. 5 For the Lord your God has chosen him and his sons from all your tribes, to stand and serve in the name of the Lord forever.
6 “Now if a Levite comes from any of your towns throughout Israel where he resides, and comes whenever he desires to the place which the Lord chooses, 7 then he shall serve in the name of the Lord his God, like all his fellow Levites who stand there before the Lord. 8 They shall eat equal portions, except what they receive from the sale of their fathers’ estates.
9 “When you enter the land which the Lord your God gives you, you shall not learn to imitate the detestable things of those nations. 10 There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, one who uses divination, one who practices witchcraft, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, 11 or one who casts a spell, or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead. 12 For whoever does these things is detestable to the Lord; and because of these detestable things the Lord your God will drive them out before you. 13 You shall be blameless before the Lord your God. 14 For those nations, which you shall dispossess, listen to those who practice witchcraft and to diviners, but as for you, the Lord your God has not allowed you to do so.
SUMMARY
Moses talks about the statutes for the tribe of Levi, and warns the people against the detestable things of other nations. He explains that the whole tribe of Levi should have no portion or inheritance of the land, but that the Lord is their inheritance. God would take care of them by having all other tribes support them with a place to live and food to eat. Moses then warns the people not to imitate the detestable things of the Canaanites including fortune-telling and sacrificing children for a secure future. He emphasizes that the Israelites are not destined by one who uses divination or a sorcerer but only by God. So the people of God should trust the Lord as their sole provider and believe that God would take care of His people.
MEDITATION & REFLECTION
Why do we worry so much about our future when we have God as our inheritance? Why do we desire so many worldly things when we have God taking care of us? We may be ruled out from worldly possessions, but we have the ultimate inheritance—the Lord!
I have been filled with worries and anxiety lately with everything going on around us. So much uncertainties, unknowns, sicknesses, and hardships I see. Everywhere I turn, there is something troublesome. I found myself being preoccupied with researching and just organizing things, everything from our house to our finances and just about whatever came to my thought. I realized through this passage that I have been doing the detestable things of the world—I was trying to take control and limit the uncertainties of our family’s future. All this however was making me sick. I haven’t been feeling well since I got the flu shot, but now I know it wasn’t the flu shot that’s causing the aches and pains. I was overwhelmed by the secular way of thinking and the demands of the world.
God spoke to me this morning and told me to instead focus on reorganizing my life with God. Only God can secure my future and I need to trust Him fully. Matthew 6:33-34 says “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”
APPLICATION
Here I am once again, humbled by the Lord and reflecting how weak I am with my faith. I will remember and hold onto verse 2….” the Lord is their inheritance, as He promised them,” whenever I feel overwhelmed. I will also continue to seek His Word and trust the Lord with my future. Isaiah 41:10 says “fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
PRAYER
Thank you, Jesus, for speaking to me this morning and casting out my worries and fears. Thank you for helping me realize why I have been feeling overwhelmed and teaching me once again that only you can bring me true peace. Your Word brought such comfort and peace in my heart. I surrender all my worries and future to you. Please guide me to reorganize my life to align with your will. Thank you for being my loving God and always bringing me back to you. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
