Called To Be a Witness To My Children

Scripture Passage: Deuteronomy 31:9-13 (NASB)

9 So Moses wrote this Law and gave it to the priests, the sons of Levi who carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and to all the elders of Israel. 10 Then Moses commanded them, saying, “At the end of every seven years, at the time of the year of the release of debts, at the Feast of Booths, 11 when all Israel comes to appear before the Lord your God at the place which He will choose, you shall read this Law before all Israel so that they hear it. 12 Assemble the people, the men, the women, the children, and the stranger who is in your town, so that they may hear and learn and fear the Lord your God, and be careful to follow all the words of this Law. 13 And their children, who have not known, will hear and learn to fear the Lord your God, as long as you live on the land which you are about to cross the Jordan to possess.”

SUMMARY

Moses, as an uncrowned king over Israel, loved God's Word and wanted to pass it on to the generation behind him so he wrote this law. Part of the job of the Levites was to minister the word of God to the nations as they were scattered throughout the nation. Moses instructed the Israelites to gather a public assembly every seven years for the reading and explanation of the law of God. What's more important about this gathering is that Moses includes every single person from the nations - not only the men and women, but also the children and the aliens.

MEDITATION & REFLECTION

God wants us to have an intimate and personal relationship with Him through his Word. But it cannot be done only by oneself. Reading God's word on a regular basis is a tough mission, and yet we know it is important. Moses tells us to gather in a corporate setting so that even the children and aliens, who lack knowledge of God's words, could hear and learn. I think that is a mission God gave us. In the midst of our troubled settings, Satan attacks us with all kinds of fears. Fear of division, fear of loss, fear for safety and protection consume us so much that we tend to seek information to make us feel content or approved. I wonder how much of what we learn from the world is based on the actual Word of God. I begin to question when and if ever, do I fear the Lord? Is it because I lack understanding of God's words? Also, do I even attempt to pass along this important mission to my kids? I pray for their safety and all the blessings I could ask for their behalf, but do I even emphasize the importance of God's words to my kids?

APPLICATION

As I read in this passage, we must create an environment where our children can learn the Word on a regular basis, so that teaching and keeping the Word may take place naturally. I will resume Family Time, which my family stopped doing a while ago. I will need to connect with my kids through reading the Bible together.

PRAYER

Dear God, I want to know you better, and more than that, I want my children and the next generations to have greater faith in you to live in this world. Please teach me how I can change the way I live and be a witness to my children. Please give me the wisdom that comes only from your Word. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
