True Blessings in God's Commands
Scripture Passage: Deuteronomy 6:10-19 (NASB)
“Then it shall come about when the Lord your God brings you into the land which He swore to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, to give you, great and splendid cities which you did not build, 11 and houses full of all good things which you did not fill, and hewn cisterns which you did not dig, vineyards and olive trees which you did not plant, and you eat and are satisfied, 12 then watch yourself, that you do not forget the Lord who brought you from the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. 13 You shall fear only the Lord your God; and you shall worship Him and swear by His name. 14 You shall not follow other gods, any of the gods of the peoples who surround you, 15 for the Lord your God in the midst of you is a jealous God; otherwise the anger of the Lord your God will be kindled against you, and He will wipe you off the face of the earth. 16 “You shall not put the Lord your God to the test, as you tested Him at Massah. 17 You should diligently keep the commandments of the Lord your God, and His testimonies and His statutes which He has commanded you. 18 You shall do what is right and good in the sight of the Lord, that it may be well with you and that you may go in and possess the good land which the Lord swore to give your fathers, 19 by driving out all your enemies from before you, as the Lord has spoken.
SUMMARY
After teaching the Ten Commandments from God, Moses continues to remind the Israelites of the blessing they received from God as they are about to head into the land God promised to their ancestors. The land of full abundance is waiting for them to enjoy and prosper in. However, Moses also warns them that the Israelites need to remember God’s deliverance of them out of slavery in Egypt. They must also worship God as He is a jealous God. The Israelites should not make the same mistake of the previous generation who tested God at Massah, and they should keep The Commandments.
MEDITATION & REFLECTION
We need to worship God and be in a close relationship with God no matter what circumstances we are in. Whether times are troubled or not, God expects His people to trust and obey Him by keeping His Commandments. Moses promised believers certain blessings would flow from obeying God. When we come to truly know God, we will also know what is right and good in His sight. Doing what is right and good in God’s sight covers all areas of life in this world and will make a real difference in our eternal prospects. What is right in the sight of God matters far more than what seems right to others.
APPLICATION
I've been praying to God about my job situation for a couple of years which has affected me physically and mentally. I am still struggling and waiting to get answers to what God has stored for me. The one thing I know is that this situation has made me seek God more, and I realize only God is my rescue and resting place. Today's passage also directed me to remember the Lord who brought me out from darkness and provided me with blessings that I did not deserve, when I accepted Jesus Christ as my savior. Because of my sin, Jesus shed His blood and died for me. My sins are set free and I received grace I did not deserve. I need to remind myself that the true blessings are those that please the Lord, and they will also be well with me. I will devote myself to search for things that would please God, and seek to obey and follow His commandments.
PRAYER
Dear God, thank you for the reminder that I should live my life keeping Your commandments. I repent that I sought the blessings that were right and good in the sight of others. Show me the way to seek what is right and good in Your sight, and let me walk on the path with full joy, Lord. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
