Teach and Witness to the Children

Scripture Passage: Deuteronomy 6:20-25 (NASB)

“When your son asks you in time to come, saying, ‘What do the testimonies and the statutes and the judgments mean which the Lord our God commanded you?’ 21 then you shall say to your son, ‘We were slaves to Pharaoh in Egypt, and the Lord brought us from Egypt with a mighty hand. 22 Moreover, the Lord showed great and distressing signs and wonders before our eyes against Egypt, Pharaoh and all his household; 23 He brought us out from there in order to bring us in, to give us the land which He had sworn to our fathers.’ 24 So the Lord commanded us to observe all these statutes, to fear the Lord our God for our good always and for our survival, as it is today. 25 It will be righteousness for us if we are careful to observe all this commandment before the Lord our God, just as He commanded us.

SUMMARY

Moses instructs the Israelites to teach their children about the laws and mighty works of God. Their children will ask them what the testimonies and laws mean. Moses tells them to teach the children how God had taken them out of Egypt and into the promised land through great signs and wonders. This is not only to pass down the accounts of His great works, but for their own survival and their own good.

MEDITATION & REFLECTION

We must never forget how God has worked in each of our lives. We are all witnesses to God's goodness and His power, and we all have a responsibility to teach our children/spiritual children. We must be sharp and prepared to answer their questions. I see how important it is to make God known to His children by sharing what we've witnessed in our own lives, since children have limited experience. Also, we're responsible to teach them what the laws mean and why they are important for our own good.

APPLICATION

Reading this passage, I realize that I am at a point where I am no longer a child, both physically and spiritually. It made me look back at the times God has made Himself known to me. I have grown so much with God, and have my own experiences of His power and mercy. I have my own account of breakthroughs He has given me in my life. Therefore, I have a responsibility to live as a witness and do my part in guiding the next generation. I feel challenged to be prepared by being sharper with the word in case anyone comes to me with questions.

PRAYER

Lord, I am amazed at how you've worked in my life. You took me out of my own personal Egypt and led me into a better place that is with You and Your people. I look back in remembrance of Your goodness. Lord, let these experiences and Your Word be tools to help me guide Your children. Help me to live as a witness wherever I go, and keep me sharpened with discernment. May You bring up a generation that knows You and loves You. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
