Obedience Which Secures God's Promises

Scripture Passage: Deuteronomy 7:12-16 (NASB)

12 “Then it shall come about, because you listen to these judgments and keep and do them, that the Lord your God will keep with you His covenant and His lovingkindness which He swore to your forefathers. 13 He will love you and bless you and multiply you; He will also bless the fruit of your womb and the fruit of your ground, your grain and your new wine and your oil, the increase of your herd and the young of your flock, in the land which He swore to your forefathers to give you. 14 You shall be blessed above all peoples; there will be no male or female barren among you or among your cattle. 15 The Lord will remove from you all sickness; and He will not put on you any of the harmful diseases of Egypt which you have known, but He will lay them on all who hate you. 16 You shall consume all the peoples whom the Lord your God will deliver to you; your eye shall not pity them, nor shall you serve their gods, for that would be a snare to you.

SUMMARY

Moses discusses how God will bless the Israelites when they listen and follow God’s commands. God promises to bless their children, their land, and their health. God also reminds them again that they should not have pity on native tribes nor serve their gods as they enter the Promised Land.

MEDITATION & REFLECTION

This passage tells us about God’s blessings when we listen and obey God’s command. The Israelites heard God’s words through Moses throughout their journey in the wilderness. As children of God, it is crucial to hear and know God’s words. Without His guidance and wisdom found in His words, we are easily distracted and lost in this world.  Moses taught the Israelites that obedience to God is the only way to receive God’s blessings in this passage. What is more important than hearing the words of God is to obey them.  He wants us to search our hearts and surrender idols/sins just as God commanded the Israelites to utterly destroy all the people in Canaan (v. 16).  When we surrender and obey His words, God promises His abundant blessings not only to us, but to our future generations as well.

APPLICATION

After meditating on today’s passage, I spent some time thinking about my spiritual life and questioned myself, “am I hearing His voice daily and obeying His words in my life?”  Ever since I joined the QT ministry, I have been spending more quality time in His words and been more consistent with reading and meditating daily. I am thankful that daily QT helped me stay focused on God rather than filling my mind with worldly things. However I realized I need to work on obeying His words. God revealed this morning that there are some areas/idols that I struggle to let go despite of God’s command to surrender completely. I often forget His grace and lovingkindness, and I fail to obey God’s words.  I will ask the Holy Spirit to remind me of His words throughout the day and give me courage to obey every morning.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, thank you for loving me and speaking to me daily even if I fail you often. Thank you for revealing the areas that I need to surrender this morning. Holy Spirit, I ask you to remind me of daily conviction throughout the day, and give me courage to obey. I pray that Your words will penetrate into my heart and life deeply, and transform me everyday to be more like You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
