Way Maker
Scripture Passage: Psalm 114:1-8 (NASB)
When Israel went forth from Egypt,
The house of Jacob from a people of strange language,
2 Judah became His sanctuary,
Israel, His dominion.
3 The sea looked and fled;
The Jordan turned back.
4 The mountains skipped like rams,
The hills, like lambs.
5 What ails you, O sea, that you flee?
O Jordan, that you turn back?
6 O mountains, that you skip like rams?
O hills, like lambs?
7 Tremble, O earth, before the Lord,
Before the God of Jacob,
8 Who turned the rock into a pool of water,
The flint into a fountain of water.
SUMMARY
The psalmist reminds the people of who God is: Way Maker. He made a way for the Israelites out of the nation of Egypt that kept them in bondage. He dwelt among His people and ruled His people with righteousness and justice. He split the sea, stopped the Jordan river, and made the mountains and hills skip. He makes the earth tremble before Him. He made water come out of the hard rock.
MEDITATION & REFLECTION
God is the One who makes a way where there seems to be no way. It's interesting, a year and a half ago, when I was going through one of the most difficult times in my life, God gave me this truth to hold onto. It was my life vest. During that time, I felt helpless, fearful, anxious, and even despairing of life itself. I couldn't see hope in the present or the future. It was then that God gave me the following verse from Isaiah 43:19, "Behold, I will do something new, now it will spring forth; will you not be aware of it? I will even make a roadway in the wilderness, rivers in the desert." These words were a promise from God to me. He was telling me that He will make a way where there seemed to be absolutely no way. Did I struggle with believing Him? It would be a lie if I said I didn't. But, God gave me enough strength and faith to hold on one day at a time, even one moment at a time. This shows that it was really Him who was holding on to me.
God has already made a way where there seems to be no way, He makes a way in our daily lives, and He will continue to make a way in future days. He has already made a way to Himself by the blood of Jesus Christ, His Son. It is finished (John 19:30). He makes a way in our lives today, as He walks with us through trials and tribulations and leads us out into victory. He will continue to make a way no matter what lies ahead, because He is Faithful and True (Rev. 19:11) and He promises that He will complete the work He has started in us (Phil. 1:6).
Out of all the things mentioned in Psalm 114, God turning the rock into a pool of water stands out to me. When I think of rocks, they are hard and very difficult to work with. I've tried digging with huge rocks in the ground, and that was difficult. And I have felt the rock-hardness of hearts and how impossible it is to break through. But, God can and He has. In fact, the earth trembles before Him and He can make water, or life, flow out of hard hearts. In other words, no matter how tough or impossible of a circumstance I am in, God is greater. I will not give authority to my circumstances, my feelings, or others, no. God is sovereign over everything, nothing is too hard for Him. I will worship Him as Lord over my family, my finances, my work, my future, etc. He dwells within me and He will lead me to good paths.
APPLICATION
I need to proclaim these truths over myself, my family, and my circumstances. I often let my circumstances and the thoughts of others dictate how I live my life, and how that has caused me so much grief and anxiety. I've had enough of it. I desire to seek God in His Word to renew my mind with solid truth and pray for God to help me break through.
PRAYER
Oh Father, You are King and Lord over all. No circumstance, no failure of mine, no weakness of mine, no person, no thing is greater than You. You are stronger. Help me, Lord, to put my trust in You. Help me to hear and heed Your voice alone. Help me to break free from these chains of hopelessness, discouragement, and striving and rest in Christ, my hope of glory. I can't do it without You.
