What/Who Do You Put Your Trust In?
Scripture Passage: Psalm 115:1-8 (NASB)
Not to us, O Lord, not to us,
But to Your name give glory
Because of Your lovingkindness, because of Your truth.
2 Why should the nations say,
“Where, now, is their God?”
3 But our God is in the heavens;
He does whatever He pleases.
4 Their idols are silver and gold,
The work of man’s hands.
5 They have mouths, but they cannot speak;
They have eyes, but they cannot see;
6 They have ears, but they cannot hear;
They have noses, but they cannot smell;
7 They have hands, but they cannot feel;
They have feet, but they cannot walk;
They cannot make a sound with their throat.
8 Those who make them will become like them,
Everyone who trusts in them.
SUMMARY
As the people of God were under the captivity of foreign nations, they were being ridiculed and mocked by these nations saying, “Where, now, is their God?” (v. 2) People of these nations, as opposed to people of God, believed and worshiped false idols made out of silver and gold with the work of human hands. Although these idol statues had mouths, eyes, ears, noses, hands, and feet, the psalmist pointed out that these parts cannot function at all, as they were lifeless and powerless. What’s the use of mouths that cannot speak, eyes that cannot see, ears that cannot hear, noses that cannot smell, hands that cannot feel, and feet that cannot walk? The psalmist is basically saying that it is meaningless and useless to put trust in false gods which have no true power. It is men who think these false idols can provide such power to them, but they actually end up serving these false gods that they created themselves. He praises the one true God who reigns in heaven, and He is the God of Israel! All glory to Him alone.
MEDITATION & REFLECTION
I thought about what false idols that I might have in my life — something that I put more trust in than my faith in God — and it is money. Although I try to live a life worthy of me saying “I love Jesus,” I often find myself pursuing money than Jesus. I’ve been trying to find comfort through financial security rather than truly trusting in His leading and provision. As I examined my heart, I was convicted that I may have wandered off from His will of trusting Him alone and completely. He gave me an unthinkable love of dying on the cross for me to save me from my sin, but I was busy building my world as I desired. I knelt down and repented.
APPLICATION
My Lord is the Lord over all His creation. He is worthy to be praised and my love and praise for Him should be my utmost priority over all things in my life. I know God will provide for my needs no matter what. I couldn’t work for nearly three months, and it’s been difficult not to think about what my work situation is going to be, and how my business will get affected by COVID-19 even after re-opening. However, I resolve to hang on to His words and follow in His lead.
Psalm 115:11 says, “You who fear the Lord, trust in the Lord; He is their help and their shield.”
Rather than worrying about my financial need, I want to turn my eyes to those people I can help with my resources. Remembering His love for me, I will try to share my love with people and be a “fisher of men,” which is the calling of His true disciples. This is the only way to return the grace and love I received from my Lord.
PRAYER
Lord, thank You for Your sacrificial love on the cross. I know we are all going through such a difficult time due to this pandemic, but I know that You are in control of this matter and will make everything right in Your time. Lord, help me be the person who can touch people who may be going through an even more difficult time than me. I want to be the one who truly emits the love of Christ through my actions. I will humbly wait on Your leading as I seek Your wisdom through the Word.
